The Texaco Fire Chief Tugboat
The
tugboat Texaco Fire Chief was built in 1967 to serve Texaco's
operations in New York City Harbor. Based in Texaco's Bayonne,
New Jersey terminal, the Fire Chief docked large oil tankers and
towed barges full of refined oil and gasoline. Jacobson Shipyard
in Oyster Bay, Long Island, built the tug. Twin 1800 horsepower
diesel engines powered the Fire Chief, which measured 100 feet
long with a 28-foot beam. The Fire Chief had a fuel capacity of
10,000 gallons, water capacity of 1500 gallons, and was able to
operate for twelve days at full power. The Texaco Fire Chief was
equipped with state of the art navigation devices including radar
and radio-telephone and was built to the highest specifications
of the American Bureau of Shipping. A crew of eight operated the
tug.
